Zelda has never just been a straight up hack and slash game. For me, right at the very beginning I didn’t necessarily remember that I could still count on certain series conventions, and that had me playing the game in a different way. With all the open-world features and destructible weapons and whatnot, it may be tempting not to treat it as such. I think is important to acknowledge that at the end of the day, Breath of the Wild is still Zelda. You’re right, Sidon, a lack of spoilers is pretty great! There will be no story spoilers, though, so no worries there. Just a note: this guide will have mild spoilers in the form of game mechanics that were not revealed during the game’s marketing. Today, I’m going to share what I have learned so far to help those who are charging into the wild for the first time. And with no free hearts lying around, this is not a Zelda game for the faint of heart. The cliffs are tall, the puzzles are challenging, and the water is full of annoying octoroks that will constantly pelt you with rocks while you are totally helpless. It may not be intentionally trying to kill you in the way that a game like Dark Souls is, but it will not give you any quarter. But now, after all these years, The Legend of Zelda is challenging gamers again with the newest entry in the series, Breath of the Wild. Of course, some of that was the result of technological limitations rather than intentional challenge. The enemies were brutal, dungeons were hard to find, and there was little to no guidance on how to use the different pieces of gear you find. The Legend of Zelda isn’t a series that’s particularly known for its difficulty, which is pretty wild when you consider just how challenging the first game was.
